Lloyd Barbee, a lawyer, legislator, and an effective voice for the NAACP, led the modern civil rights movement in Wisconsin for many years. In this year marking the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, it is fitting to recognize Wisconsin's most influential figure in implementing that decision.

Maximum enlightenment requires maximum education. Blacks hav6e traditionally stressed education even at the risk of death during American slavery. It's up to those of us who recognize what education can do to demand that teachers teach, educators educate, students learn and that school[s] serve as places for enlightenment rather than holding tanks for ignorance, [or] fosterers [of] drop outs, cop outs and scapegoats...
