Here's how the service works:
If you need a lawyer, and want a referral through the
State Bar's Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS), complete the client profile
form. After completing this form, click the "Continue" button to choose the areas of law
you need assistance with. After choosing the areas of law, click the "Submit Your
Information" button at the bottom of the page.
Within seconds, LRIS will match you with an attorney in your county (or as close as possible) that handles your area(s) of interest.
Print and save a copy of the confirmation of your referral, which includes the attorney's name, address, and phone number (LRIS also will send you and the attorney a copy in the mail).
After you receive your referral, call the attorney's office to schedule an appointment. Be sure to tell the attorney that you were referred by the State Bar's Lawyer Referral and Information Service. This ensures that your initial half-hour consultation will cost no more than $20. Discuss with the lawyer the fees he or she will charge after the initial consultation. If you decide not to take further action after the first visit, you are under no obligation to hire the lawyer.
