State Bar seeks nominations for 2008 Wisconsin Golden Gavel awards, nominations due Sept. 30 August 5, 2008 - The State Bar Golden Gavel awards recognize photography, published articles, radio and television broadcasts, and websites that foster greater public understanding of the judicial and legal system; inform and educate citizens as to the roles of society, the law, the courts, law enforcement agencies, and the legal profession; and disclose practices or procedures that improve efforts to reform and modernize our laws, courts, or law agencies statewide. Nominations are due Sept. 30. More
State Bar files petition creating commission to improve access to legal services for the poor

July 24, 2008 - The State Bar recently filed a petition with the Wisconsin Supreme Court to establish a Wisconsin Access to Justice Commission, a key recommendation from the Access to Justice Study Committee’s report, Bridging the Justice Gap. If adopted, the commission would become the formal structure for bringing together representatives of the bar, the judiciary, the legislature, the governor, and the public to focus attention on this pressing problem. More

State Bar asks Governor to adequately fund prosecutors and public defenders July 24, 2008 - State Bar President Diane Diel today asked Governor Jim Doyle to continue his fight for equal justice in Wisconsin by taking measures to restore adequate numbers of qualified prosecutors and defense attorneys. "Our criminal justice system is in a state of crisis," Diel said. "Our state is losing qualified prosecutors and defense attorneys willing to take State Public Defender (SPD) cases at ridiculously low hourly rates." More
